My name is ARAI from Tokyo, Japan.
I was born in 1959 in Toyama City, 600 kilometers from Tokyo.
So I am now 47 years old.
My house faces a big road leading to Tokyo.
In those days, my house was almost completely surrounded by rice fields, with only a few petrol stations nearby.
Basically, my hometown was very much in the countryside.
When I was in primary school in Japan, we had school lunches with bread, powdered milk, and some Japanese dishes.
I had never eaten bread or drunk milk at home.
We ate rice and miso soup at home.
The bread was made from surplus flour, and the powdered milk also came from surplus food supplies that were used as livestock feed in the United States.
The U.S. government sold them to the Japanese government.
So we became familiar with bread and milk.
Sometimes I asked my mother to buy bread and milk.
But she said they were too expensive for us.
ARAI asked some audience members to come up and splash flour and powdered milk over his head and the balloon globe.
Then he asked them to massage him.
I also liked Coca-Cola very much, but I could only have it once or twice a year.
When our relatives visited us for New Year’s or some other festival, they gave me a little pocket money.
And I ran to buy Coca-Cola.
My parents asked me why I liked Coca-Cola, which tasted like medicine and was very expensive!
In those days, TV commercials always played the “Del Monte Tomato Ketchup” song.
We happily sang the “Del Monte Tomato Ketchup” song without knowing what ketchup was.
After I found out what ketchup was, I liked it very much and ate it with everything.
But my parents never used it.
ARAI danced and sang the “Del Monte Tomato Ketchup” song.
In my house, there was Ajinomoto, monosodium glutamate, on the kitchen table.
Glutamate was commercialized by the Japanese company Ajinomoto in the 1930s.
Usually, my family used it in almost all our dishes.
Ajinomoto was said to make people clever, especially children.
ARAI said:
Forty years ago, my hometown was very much in the countryside.
But nowadays, there are no rice fields.
There are only McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, 24-hour convenience stores, and American-style roadside restaurants.
Also, there is no Ajinomoto on our Japanese kitchen tables anymore.
But all the food we buy from stores already contains it.
My father, who died four years ago (2002), liked Kentucky Fried Chicken very much in his later years.
He also liked Japanese sake very much.
He drank sake and ate Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He drank sake with Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Now my mother lives alone in my hometown.
She told me that sometimes she does not feel like cooking, so she buys bread and milk at a 24-hour convenience store for her lonely dinner.

私は日本の東京から来たARAIです。

1959年、東京から600キロ離れた富山市で 生まれました。

ですから、私は今47歳です。

私の家は、東京へ向かう大きな道路に面していま す。

当時、私の家はほとんど完全に田んぼに囲まれて いて、近くにガソリンスタンドがいくつかあるだけでした。

基本的に、私の故郷はとても田舎でした。

日本の小学校に通っていたころ、学校給食ではパ ンと脱脂粉乳、それにいくつかの日本食が出ました。

私は家ではパンを食べたことも、牛乳 を飲んだこともありませんでした。

家では、ご飯と味噌汁を食べていました。

パンは余剰小麦から作られていて、脱脂粉乳もま た、アメリカで家畜の飼料として使われていた余剰食料から来たものでした。

アメリカ政府が、それらを日本政府に売っていた のです。

そうして私たちは、パンと牛乳に慣れていきまし た。

ときどき私は、母にパンと牛乳を買ってほしいと 頼みました。

でも母は、「私たちには高すぎる」と言いまし た。

ARAIは観客の何人かにステージへ上がっても らい、小麦粉と脱脂粉乳を自分の頭と風船の地球儀にかけてもらった。

そして、彼らにARAIの身体をマッサージして もらった。

私はコカ・コーラも大好きでしたが、飲めるのは 年に1、2回だけでした。

お正月や何かのお祝いのときに親戚が家に来る と、彼らは私に少し小遣いをくれました。

私はその小遣いを持って、コカ・コーラを買いに 走りました。

両親は、薬みたいな味がして、とても高いコカ・ コーラの、どこがそんなに好きなのかと私に聞きました！

当時、テレビのコマーシャルでは、いつも「デル モンテ・トマトケチャップ」の歌が流れていました。

私たちはケチャップが何なのかも知らないまま、 「デルモンテ・トマトケチャップ」の歌を楽しそうに歌っていました。

ケチャップが何なのかを知ってから、私はそれが 大好きになり、何にでもかけて食べました。

でも、両親は決して使いませんでした。

ARAIは「デルモンテ・トマトケチャップ」の 歌を歌いながら踊った。

私の家の台所のテーブルには、味の素、つ まりグルタミン酸ナトリウムがありました。

グルタミン酸は、1930年代に日本の会社、味 の素によって商品化されました。

普段、私の家族は、ほとんどすべての 料理にそれを使っていました。

味の素を使うと頭がよくなる、と言われていまし た。特に子どもにはよい、と。

40年前、私の故郷はとても田舎でした。

でも今では、田んぼはありません。

あるのは、マクドナルド、ケンタッキーフライド チキン、24時間営業のコンビニエンスストア、そしてアメリカ式のロードサイド・レストランばかりです。

そして今では、日本の台所のテーブルに味の素は ありません。

でも、私たちが店で買う食べ物には、す でに味の素が入っています。

4年前、つまり2002年に亡くなった私の父 は、晩年、ケンタッキーフライドチキンが大好きでした。

そして、日本酒も大好きでした。

父は日本酒を飲みながら、ケンタッ キーフライドチキンを食べました。

ケンタッキーフライドチキンを食べながら、日 本酒を飲んでいました。

今、母は私の故郷で一人暮らしをしています。

母は、ときどき料理をする気になれないことがあ るので、寂しいときには24時間営業のコンビニでパンと牛乳を買ってくる、と私に言いました。
